Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Mentorship programs have long been recognized as vital tools for nurturing leadership potential, particularly in the political sphere. In Makurdi LGA, Benue State, youth empowerment initiatives, often involving mentorship programs, have played a key role in the development of emerging political leaders (Tunde & Ibrahim, 2023). These programs are designed to equip young individuals with the skills, knowledge, and networks necessary to assume leadership roles in local governance. Political leadership development through mentorship helps create a new generation of leaders who are better prepared to navigate the complexities of governance and public service. These mentorship initiatives often include training in public speaking, policy development, negotiation, and community engagement. Furthermore, they facilitate networking with seasoned political leaders, providing aspiring politicians with opportunities to gain first-hand insights into the political process. This study aims to explore how mentorship programs in Makurdi LGA influence the political leadership development of youth participants, focusing on their readiness to take on political roles and contribute to local governance.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing importance of youth involvement in politics, there remains a gap in understanding the specific impact of mentorship programs on political leadership development in Nigeria's local government areas. In Makurdi LGA, youth empowerment initiatives, while well-intentioned, have faced challenges related to the effectiveness of mentorship programs in cultivating competent political leaders. Questions arise about the level of impact these programs have on participants, particularly in terms of equipping them with the necessary skills to assume leadership positions within the political landscape. There is also a lack of detailed research on how these programs contribute to long-term political engagement and leadership in the local context of Makurdi LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of mentorship programs as a tool for developing political leadership in Nigeria’s local government areas. The findings will be useful for policymakers, political parties, and youth organizations looking to strengthen youth involvement in politics. By focusing on Makurdi LGA, this research will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on how youth empowerment initiatives can foster a new generation of politically engaged and competent leaders. Additionally, the study will offer recommendations for enhancing mentorship programs to maximize their impact on political leadership development.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
